Camanche Middle School and Camanche High School are introducing an expanded learning experience when students return from winter break. From January 5–9, both schools will step away from typical schedules and participate in J-Term, a week designed to help students explore future careers and community involvement in meaningful, hands-on ways. This is the first combined program of its kind in Eastern Iowa.
At the middle school, students in grades 5–8 will choose an area of interest and spend the week learning through field trips, workshops, and guest speakers. Areas offered include writing, marketing, farming, forensics, community service, teaching, with a babysitter certification opportunity, engineering-based LEGO builds, and several other specialized topics. Students will not receive grades during J-Term; instead, they will focus on discovery, skill development, and personal interest.
Camanche High School will be participating in J-Term as well, with a stronger emphasis on career pathways. Many high school students will be job shadowing local businesses and organizations to gain firsthand exposure to professional environments and learn what various careers look like in practice.
“This is a chance for students to imagine possibilities they may not have considered yet,” said school staff involved in planning. “We want them to ask questions, meet mentors, see real workplaces, and find something that excites them.”
The middle school experience will conclude with a public J-Term Showcase on Thursday, January 8, from 5:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Camanche Middle School. Families and community members are invited to attend and view student-created products, presentations, and displays created throughout the week.
