Senior Financial Accountant

The Senior Financial Accountant supports accurate and timely financial reporting across multiple related companies, including construction/fabrication, marine services, and harbor/marina operations. This role is responsible for core accounting functions—cash flow forecasting, month-end close, job costing support, general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, fixed assets/equipment tracking, and financial analysis—with a strong emphasis on construction accounting practices and operational collaboration with project and field leadership. The Senior Accountant oversees payroll, AP/AR, works closely with operations, and leadership to ensure clean books, reliable job cost visibility, and GAAP compliant financial processes across all entities. This role is responsible for ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency, while maintaining hands-on responsibility for daily accounting, payroll, reporting, and budgeting activities.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Own cash flow forecasting (weekly/monthly), delivering clear, accurate, and timely responses to frequent leadership cash flow requests.
  • Lead WIP accounting and project financial reporting, including percent complete, over/under billings, and margin analysis.
  • Partner with project teams to improve billing teaming, accelerate collections, and optimize working capital (AR, retainage, AP timing).
  • Ensure accurate revenue recognition, job cost tracking, and cost-to-complete forecasts across all projects.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, variance analysis, and cash-focused reporting tied to operational performance.
  • Support billing, collections, and change order tracking to minimize cash delays and resolve aging balances.
  • Maintain strong controls, reconciliations, and documentation to support close, audit readiness, and compliance.
  • Drive process improvements in forecasting, WIP, and job cost systems to increase accuracy and speed.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal reporting requirements (e.g., DOL, IRS).
  • Ability to supervise, manage, mentor, motivate, and/or support accounting personnel, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
  • Requires a high level of proficiency in job-costing and WIP accounting and finance.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, and attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of organization’s applicable financial practices and procedures, as well as a thorough understanding of state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other standard Microsoft Office tools and software.
  • Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Honest and ethical application in completing work tasks.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal controls.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, plus 5 years’ of accounting experience in construction or job-costing accounting; or, Associate’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, plus 7 years’ of accounting experience, with demonstrated senior-level responsibilities.
  • Experience working in multi-entity/intercompany accounting environment; multi-project or construction job costing environments preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Account (CMA) designation preferred.
  • Familiarity with construction contracts, bonding, and insurance requirements.
  • Experience in construction, rigging, fabrication or marine industry accounting workflows.
