Teams of Junior Achievement students from 23 Schools/Communities are participating in the 2024 JA Stock Market Challenge, a simulation-based program in which high school students compete by investing and trading fake funds in the real market creating draft portfolios as teams, and finalizing their stock selections.
The challenge, alongside JA Take Stock in Your Future, made possible through the support of RSM, introduces high school students to the basic concepts of how the stock market works and the impact of current events on the stock market. Students discover the benefits and challenges of investing in the stock market as part of a broader, long-term investment strategy and the risks and rewards of trading. The JA Stock Market Challenge Competition takes place on Tuesday, October 22nd at the Rogalski Center at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, IA.
High schools with participating teams in the JA Stock Market Challenge include: Alleman High School, Bettendorf High School, Burlington High School, Calamus-Wheatland High School, Central DeWitt High School, Central Lee High School, Davenport West High School, Highland High School, Holy Trinity Catholic High School, Kewanee High School, LaSalle Peru Township High School, MidCity High School, North Cedar High School, North Scott High School, Pleasant Valley High School, River Ridge High School, Rivermont Collegiate, Thurgood Marshall Learning Center, United High School, Wapello High School, Washington High School, West Burlington High School, and Winfield-Mt. Union High School.
“We at Junior Achievement of the Heartland are incredibly excited to have teams from our community participate in this event!” said Dougal Nelson, President/CEO, JA of the Heartland. “The JA Stock Market Challenge allows students to experience the rush of being on the trade floor, which provides a great experience for students interested in exploring what stock investment is like today.”
With a focus on financial literacy and insights into how a company’s performance on the stock market can be influenced by current events, The JA Stock Market Challenge competition brings business economics to life. As students work in teams, to make decisions on when to buy, sell, or trade stocks, they begin to see how every choice made in investing relates to its future success.
Following the student competition in the morning of October 22nd, JA will hold the JA Stock Market Challenge – Corporate Competition at 6pm that evening. More than 15 corporate teams will compete in the same stock market simulation as the high school students to see who will end up with the highest ROI at the end of the trading cycle and be crowned the JA Stock Market Champion!
The JA Stock Market Challenge is presented by RSM US LLP, and proudly sponsored by Empeople Credit Union, Per Mar Security Services, Eaton, Green Buick GMC, Raymond James, Group O, Honkamp, and St. Ambrose University.
